Youth Travel Ambassadors
The Youth Travel Ambassador (YTA) programme provides young people aged 11 to 19 with the skills and confidence to address transport issues affecting their school community. With support from TfL, the local borough and school staff, YTA teams research and develop behaviour change campaigns, focusing on Active Travel, Road Safety and improving the passenger experience, supporting the Mayor’s Transport Strategy for London. Campaign Junction, a Dragons Den style event, is the first project milestone. Students have the opportunity to pitch their proposals to an expert panel, receiving professional feedback and funding to get their projects off the ground.
On Friday 15th of February, the Connaught YTA team went to pitch our ideas for funding at the Transport for London’s office in Southwark. We presented two ideas to a judging panel. The first idea was an Escape Room event and the second, a bike excursion to promote a healthier and eco-friendly way of traveling to school.
Student’s will have to escape a room by answering questions about active travel and road safety. The bike excursion will take place at lunchtime/ weekend where students will cycle a designated distance to show how using bikes can be a better alternative way to get to school. We want students to appreciate bikes and want them to understand the importance of active travel.
Overall, we gained a lot from The Dragons’ Den experience and we were generously awarded £200 to initiate our project.
